In an Emiri decree of late 2011, the second Tuesday of each February has been set aside as a national holiday for Qatar in which “All government ministries and agencies and firms and establishments in the private sector shall do the needful to organise a wide range of sports activities on that day for different age groups.”
We at Fitness Qatar know of a number of events taking place in town organised by major corporates. Qtel are having free exercise bootcamps and spinning sessions as well as a mini olympics at Museum Park on the Corniche and Maersk are hosting a range of physical activities at Aspire Park.
A number of companies are organising week long health awareness and fitness tests for their staff.
This is a great initiative but we hope it doesn’t just stop with this one day. Qatar has an exercise aversion problem. With the no pedestrian culture, roads to dangerous to cycle on and a coastal town with no beaches outside 5* hotels people are more sedentary than usual.
So all of us at Fitness Qatar hope that you use this opportunity to kick start your drive to be fitter in 2012. Get your whole family out there and have a great day!
